Fleet GPS Tracking FAQ | Pure Connect GPS

Question 1

What is fleet GPS tracking?

Accepted Answer

Fleet GPS tracking uses satellite-based Global Positioning System technology combined with cellular data networks to monitor the real-time location, speed, and status of vehicles and assets. A small GPS device installed in each vehicle transmits data to a cloud platform where fleet managers can view live maps, replay historical routes, receive alerts, and generate reports — all from a web browser or mobile app.

Question 2

How accurate is GPS fleet tracking?

Accepted Answer

Modern commercial GPS tracking devices are accurate to within 2–5 meters under open sky conditions. Accuracy can be slightly reduced in dense urban environments, tunnels, or areas with heavy tree cover. Pure Connect GPS devices use high-sensitivity GPS chipsets and cellular triangulation to maintain reliable positioning even in challenging environments.

Question 3

How does real-time GPS tracking work?

Accepted Answer

A GPS tracker installed in your vehicle receives signals from multiple satellites to calculate its precise location. That location data — along with speed, heading, ignition status, and other diagnostics — is transmitted over a cellular network (4G LTE) to Pure Connect GPS cloud servers. You can then view this data live on a map, set up automated alerts, and access historical reports from any internet-connected device.

Question 4

What is the difference between active and passive GPS tracking?

Accepted Answer

Active GPS tracking transmits location data in real time over a cellular network, allowing you to see where vehicles are right now. Passive GPS tracking stores location data on the device and uploads it when the vehicle returns to a base or is connected to a computer. Pure Connect GPS uses active tracking so you always have live visibility into your fleet.

Question 5

What features does Pure Connect GPS offer?

Accepted Answer

Pure Connect GPS provides real-time vehicle tracking, driver behavior monitoring (speeding, harsh braking, rapid acceleration), geofencing with instant alerts, route history and replay, fuel usage reporting, maintenance scheduling, video telematics with in-cab AI coaching, equipment and asset tracking, field crew management via Field Sync, and a full hardware catalog including dashcams and AI devices.

Question 6

What is geofencing and how does it help my fleet?

Accepted Answer

Geofencing lets you draw virtual boundaries on a map — around job sites, customer locations, restricted zones, or your depot. When a vehicle enters or exits a geofence, you receive an instant alert via email or SMS. This helps you verify arrival times, prevent unauthorized vehicle use, reduce liability, and keep customers informed of ETAs automatically.

Question 7

What is video telematics?

Accepted Answer

Video telematics combines GPS tracking with in-vehicle cameras and AI analysis. Dashcams record forward-facing and in-cab footage, while AI algorithms detect risky behaviors like distracted driving, phone use, drowsiness, and tailgating in real time. Drivers receive instant in-cab audio coaching, and managers get event clips with context — reducing accidents, lowering insurance premiums, and protecting your business from false claims.

Question 8

Can I track equipment and non-powered assets?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Pure Connect GPS offers battery-powered asset trackers for trailers, generators, heavy equipment, and other non-powered assets. These devices report location on a configurable schedule and send alerts for movement, tampering, or low battery — giving you full visibility into your entire asset inventory, not just vehicles.

Question 9

Does Pure Connect GPS offer driver behavior monitoring?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The platform tracks speeding, harsh braking, rapid acceleration, sharp cornering, and idling. Each driver receives a behavior score, and managers can set thresholds for automated alerts. Combined with video telematics, you get both data and visual evidence to coach drivers, reduce fuel waste, and lower accident rates.

Question 10

Can I set up automated alerts and notifications?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Pure Connect GPS supports a wide range of configurable alerts including speeding, geofence entry/exit, after-hours vehicle use, engine fault codes, low battery, excessive idling, and more. Alerts can be delivered via email, SMS, or in-app notification — and can be routed to specific managers or team members based on vehicle group or alert type.

Question 11

How are GPS trackers installed in vehicles?

Accepted Answer

Pure Connect GPS devices are typically hardwired to the vehicle's OBD-II port or directly to the battery and ignition circuit. Installation takes 15–30 minutes per vehicle and can be performed by a certified technician or a mechanically inclined fleet manager following our step-by-step guide. We also offer plug-and-play OBD-II devices for quick deployment with no wiring required.

Question 12

How long does it take to get my fleet set up?

Accepted Answer

Most fleets are fully operational within 1–3 business days. After signing up, you receive your devices pre-configured and ready to install. Our onboarding team walks you through the platform, helps you configure alerts and geofences, and ensures your team is comfortable using the system before going live.

Question 13

Do I need a smartphone or special equipment to use Pure Connect GPS?

Accepted Answer

No special equipment is required. The Pure Connect GPS platform is fully web-based and accessible from any modern browser on a desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone. A dedicated mobile app is also available for iOS and Android, giving drivers and field managers access on the go.

Question 14

How much does fleet GPS tracking cost?

Accepted Answer

Pricing depends on fleet size, features selected, and contract length. Pure Connect GPS offers flexible monthly plans with no large upfront hardware costs through our Included Device Program. Contact our team for a custom quote tailored to your fleet — most customers see a full return on investment within the first 60–90 days through fuel savings, reduced overtime, and lower insurance premiums.

Question 15

Is there a long-term contract required?

Accepted Answer

Pure Connect GPS offers both month-to-month and annual contract options. Annual plans typically include better pricing and access to our Included Device Program, where hardware is provided at no additional cost. Our team will work with you to find the right plan for your fleet size and budget.

Question 16

What is the Included Device Program?

Accepted Answer

The Included Device Program provides GPS tracking hardware at no upfront cost when you sign up for an annual service plan. This eliminates the barrier of large hardware purchases and lets you scale your fleet tracking deployment without capital expenditure. Ask our sales team about current eligibility requirements.

Question 17

How does GPS tracking reduce fuel costs?

Accepted Answer

GPS tracking reduces fuel costs in several ways: eliminating excessive idling (which can waste 0.5–1 gallon per hour), optimizing routes to reduce total miles driven, reducing unauthorized personal use of vehicles, and coaching drivers to adopt smoother acceleration and braking habits. Fleets typically see 10–20% fuel savings within the first few months of deployment.

Question 18

Can GPS tracking lower my fleet insurance premiums?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many insurance carriers offer discounts of 10–20% for fleets using GPS tracking and video telematics. The combination of driver behavior data and dashcam footage demonstrates risk reduction to insurers and provides exculpatory evidence in the event of an accident or false claim. Pure Connect GPS can provide documentation to support your insurance discount application.

Question 19

How does fleet tracking improve customer service?

Accepted Answer

Real-time tracking allows dispatchers to provide customers with accurate ETAs, confirm service completion times, and quickly reroute the nearest available vehicle to urgent calls. Geofencing can trigger automatic customer notifications when a technician is en route or has arrived. This transparency reduces inbound "where is my driver?" calls and significantly improves customer satisfaction scores.

Question 20

How does GPS tracking help with compliance and IFTA reporting?

Accepted Answer

Pure Connect GPS automatically logs mileage by jurisdiction, making IFTA (International Fuel Tax Agreement) reporting straightforward and audit-ready. The platform also supports Hours of Service (HOS) logging for regulated drivers and generates the documentation needed for DOT compliance reviews — saving hours of manual record-keeping each quarter.

Question 21

Is employee GPS tracking legal?

Accepted Answer

Yes, in most jurisdictions employers have the legal right to track company-owned vehicles used for business purposes. Best practice is to inform employees in writing that company vehicles are tracked, include a tracking policy in your employee handbook, and limit tracking to business hours or business use. Pure Connect GPS recommends consulting with your legal counsel to ensure your tracking policy complies with applicable state and local laws.

Question 22
